RodeoHouston Preview, Format, and How to Watch

It’s time for the richest regular season rodeo of the year as RodeoHouston kicks off with more than $2 million up for grabs. The RodeoHouston Super Series is a 20-day tournament-style competition that awards the champion $50,000 in the Finals alone.

FORMAT

The RodeoHouston Super Series consists of 40 top rodeo competitors across eight events. The series is divided into five brackets that have three rounds each. There are nine competitors in each event per round. The Top 4 competitors in each Super Series advance to one of two Semifinal rounds. The Top 4 competitors from each Semifinal go to the Championship. The remaining six competitors from each Semifinal get one more chance by competing in one of two Wildcard rounds. The top athlete from each Wildcard advances to the Championship.

Ten athletes will compete in the Championship and the Top 4 in each event ride one more time in Shootout with the Champion taking home $50,000.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Bareback Riding

The best in the world will be competing in each event, and in bareback riding nobody has been better than Rocker Steiner during the Texas Swing. Rocker has won Fort Worth and San Antonio this year as he looks to make it three-for-three in the Lone Star State as he competes in Super Series 5. Steiner has stiff competition in his Super Series as the No. 2 man in the world and 2023 World Champion Keenan Hayes will look to take back the No. 1 spot in the PRCA World Standings. Other notable competitors are 2022 World Champion Jess Pope, who will compete in Super Series 3 and will compete against the 2023 RodeoHouston Champion Leighton Berry.

Saddle Bronc Riding

2023 World Champion Zeke Thurston highlights the Saddle Bronc Riding field and will be competing in Super Series 4. There will be four Wrights competing with Statler, Spencer, Rusty, and Ryder all looking for a big payday. 2023 RodeoHouston Champion is set to compete in Super Series 5 as he looks to repeat.

Bull Riding

There will be no repeat champion in Bull Riding as 2023 RodeoHouston Champ Ky Hamilton is sidelined with an injury. With Stetson Wright also missing the rodeo, the Bull Riding is wide open. Last year Josh Frost finished second at the rodeo and now has an inside path to his first RodeoHouston title. Frost will compete in Super Series 3 as he looks to kickstart his 2024 season.

Steer Wrestling

Dalton Massey’s breakout season was due in large part to his win at the 2023 RodeoHouston and he has his eyes on a repeat. Massey will compete in Super Series 3 as he looks to catch Will Lummus who holds the No. 1 spot in the PRCA World Standings and will also be competing in the third Super Series.

Team Roping

Rhen Richard and Jeremy Buhler begin their road to a repeat in Super Series 1 in the Team Roping. The two dominated the Shootout Round last year, winning by over 4 seconds with a 5.5-second run. 2023 World Champions Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp are also slated to compete in Super Series 1 as they continue their quest for back-to-back World Titles.

Tie-Down Roping

All eyes will be on Shad Mayfield who will compete in Super Series 5. Mayfield is off to one of the best starts to a season we have ever seen with nearly $100,000 earned before RodeoHouston kicks off. 2023 World Champion and RodoeHouston Champion Riley Webb competes in Super Series 2 as he looks to close ground on Shad who holds the No. 1 spot in the PRCA World Standings.

Barrel Racing

Jordon Briggs enters RodoeHouston as the defending champ and will compete in Super Series 2. A year ago Briggs edged out Molly Otto with a 14.73 second run in the Shootout Round to get the win. Last year Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi rewrote the record book and will look to repeat as World Champ. She will compete alongside Briggs in Super Series 2.
