It is no surprise that 2020 World Champion Shad Mayfield is a force to be reckoned with in the tie-down roping and this year, he is heading to his fifth National Finals Rodeo.
He is also your Pyranha Timed Event Athlete of the Week after adding a massive win to his long list of accomplishments.
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mayfield won the first ever Governor’s Cup and the almost $40,000 payday that came with it has Mayfield that much closer to closing the gap to No. 1.
Mayfield won $10,000 and had his fastest run of the weekend in Round 1 when he stopped the clock at 7.2 seconds. He followed it up with a tie for third in Round 2 and second place finish in the Eight-Man Round. In the Finals, the New Mexico native tied a 7.3 to win it all by eight tenths of a second. All four of his times were 7.5 seconds or faster giving him 10 such times this season, which put him second in the PRCA.
Thanks to raw horsepower, good draws and Mayfield’s abilities, he’ll always goes down as the first ever Governor’s Cup champion in the tie-down roping.
