JJ Hampton, multi-time World Champion and celebrated breakaway roper, is recognized not only for her remarkable determination in the arena but also for her distinctive purple felt hat.
In 1994, Hampton secured her first two Gold Buckles and continued to excel in multiple events in the WPRA including tie-down roping, team roping and breakaway roping, capturing eighteen World Titles along the way.
As Hampton began her journey in professional rodeo over thirty years ago, the industry has made drastic changes, however, the largest impacts made on the sport of breakaway have taken place over the past two years.
“Its crazy that my career has lasted this long and been that good. Glory to God for the longevity of me and my body that I get to see the fruition of all this time that we spent in the sport of breakaway,” Hampton said.
For the entirety of Hampton’s career, she has surrounded herself with fellow cowgirls and loved ones that support and share her dreams, giving her the backing needed to achieve her goals.
“I say surround yourself with people who are positive and believe in you and want you to do good because it’ll take you further than any of your ability could. If you have someone behind you, believing in you, you’ll go far,” Hampton said.
As rodeo continues to grow with each passing season, the possibilities in the breakaway roping are flourishing with more money and opportunities introduced.
“I’m so proud for the next girl that’s coming behind me, the eighth grader or the freshman in high school who by the time she gets here is going to be able to actually rope and make a living doing this.”
