Red Steagall Looks Back on Life with Baxter Black

Red Steagall and Baxter Black are two of the Western world’s greatest icons.

“I’m so proud to be here and I know that Baxter is in a better place even though we’re sad about it. But I know that he is where he wanted to be and where he expected to be,” Steagall said.

Steagall met Black after a man named Will gave him a piece of Black’s writing and Steagall had to meet him. He invited him to the ceremony of his office opening in Fort Worth and the rest is history.

Two of the biggest Western icons had so much in common and they shared a love for all things Western art.

“Baxter had an unbelievable impact on me. Both from a personal standpoint as a friend, we knew each other was there anytime we need them, but just to watch him use the language to create an image that nobody else could see… but I’d like to close this with the end of a poem that I have used at a gillian funerals. When he said ‘and God needed one more good cowboy’ and Baxter fit right in,” Steagall said.
